The architectural design of the new HUS Bridge Hospital (Siltasairaala) in Meilahti, Helsinki, is on display at the international architecture exhibition ’Time Space Existence’ in Venice.

This summer Finnish hospital architecture and design is visible in Venice. The Time Space Existence -exhibition held in Palazzo Bembo showcases HUS Bridge Hospital’s architectural design through photographs, rendered images, and explanatory text. The theme of the exhibition is responsibility.

The hospital was opened for use this year. A Finnish-French coalition called Team Integrated was responsible for the architectural design of the hospital, formed by AW2 Architects –part of AINS Group, B&M Architects, Harris-Kjisik Architects, and the French office Brunet Saunier Architectures. Lead architect of Siltasairaala was Matti Anttila from AW2 Architects –part of AINS Group.

Efficient integration of functions and unique geometric form guided the architectural design of the Bridge Hospital.

The hospital’s two-story, glass connecting bridge connects the two parts of the hospital building, which are also connected to the existing buildings, tunnel network, and hospital technology of the Meilahti hospital area.

Natural light was used as much as possible in the hospital. The premises have views to the outside and some of the patient rooms have a sea view. The sea was also an inspiration to the art integrated into the hospital’s facade.

”Right now there is global interest in Finnish hospital design. It’s wonderful that it will get an opportunity to be displayed this summer in Venice, where the biennal exhibition showcases the most interesting architecture around the world currently”, says Business Area Director Matti Anttila.

Palazzo Bembo was built in the 1400’s and is located along Canal Grande. The exhibition continues into Palazzo Mora as well as into the Giardini della Marinaressa gardens. Time Space Existence -exhibition is organized by the European Cultural Centre and is open during the architectural biennal event. The 18th Venice architecture biennal is open from 20.5.-26.11.2023. It is one of the largest architectural events in the world.
